Sunday 6th August 2006 - Roma and then Sorrento near Napoli

We checked out of the hotel and left our bags at the train station. From there, we took the metro to Ottaviano and walked to Vatican City... Or as Marina put it "Italy's finest theme park, Popeland"! Isn't she naughty?! Unfortunately, the cistine chapel was closed so we went straight to St Peter's Basilica, wandered round, then walked the hundreds of steps to the top of the dome to enjoy the views of Rome.

After enjoying the Vatican, we walked to St Angelo's Castle and from there, quite a way north along the Tiber to the metro, which took us back to the mainline station, Termini. We had to wait a couple of hours there for the 14.49 train to Napoli.

The train to Napoli took about 2 and a half hours. At Napoli, we changed onto some private railway (so no inter-rail!) and travelled for a further hour to Sorrento. Sorrento turned out to be a very beautiful place and had an excellent campsite with breathtaking views of the bay of Naples, the town and across the bay, Vesuvius. Our tents were pitched on a terrace amongst olive trees. On arrival, for reasons we never did figure out, there was a spectatular fireworks display in the town, visible from our grandstand view above the cliffs. Were they celebrating the arrival of the Woolleys?

The campsite also turned out to have a very reasonable restaurant on site which did the best pizza ever. We like it here :-)
