Saturday 5th August 2006 - Roma

We checked out of the nasty campsite at Pisa as early as we could and headed straight for the train station. Arriving in Roma in the early afternoon, we decided that to make the most of our available time, we wouldn't camp, thus avoiding the trek out of the city to a camp site (and back again) and instead looked for a hotel at the information office in the railway station. To our alarm, we were told that Madonna was performing in Roma the next day so that hotel accomodation was hard to come by! That said... we were found a suitable family room in a hotel an easy walk from the train station with minimal fuss in the end.

Roma is a great place to explore on foot or by public transport as most of the key sights are fairly close together. We headed out on foot and bought provisions for a picnic in a square on the way to the Colloseum. From there, we continued on our way for an afternoon at the key attractions. In all, we visited the colosseum, the forum, the Vittorio Emanuele monument, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

Afterwards, we returned to hotel to shower and rest. In the evening we went to the lovely Piazza Navona and had dinner there. This was followed by a stroll to Piazza de Fiori then a bus back to the hotel.

Leaving the camp site in Pisa. Jack apologises for the photo being out of focus!
