Southern Sandstone

Martin, Lesley and Paul decided to travel to Harrisons Rocks in Kent rather than make their usual Saturday morning trip to the Craggy Island climbing wall, it being a beautiful Spring day and the ideal opportunity to touch real rock for the first time this year. And what an excellent decision that turned out to be!

We all climbed some incredibly slimy and generally horrible route to start with (name of no importance!) and the phrase "should have gone to Craggy" had been uttered only 30 minutes into our trip! But happily, not much further along the crag, the conditions were better and we all climbed the very enjoyable Isolated Buttress (4C). Martin then had a good old go at a 5C route called Wailing Wall, failing to quite make it to the top when the holds all but vanished at the crux, but enjoying the attempt very much nevertheless. Lesley and Paul then climbed Crack and Cave (4A). Finally, Martin climbed Unclimbed Wall (5B).... not a clean climb... but he got to the top nevertheless. Paul and Lesley finished their day with an attempt at this route too.

This is sandstone. Mmmmm, yummy! ...and so is this.

Martin making the "leap of faith" from the top of the aptly named Isolated Buttress (the name of the whole rock as well as the 4C route we climbed) ...and back again
Martin made a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt at Wailing Wall (5C). Excellent climbing right up to the crux where it suddenly got incredibly hard! Lesley, about to start Crack and Cave (4A).
