Lisbon, Portugal 12th January 2008

Martin spent a week in Lisbon working from the 8th-15th January. Over the weekend, Saturday was a very nice day and so presented the opportunity for some exploration of the city on foot.

After a 15 minute walk from the hotel, the first area visited was the Bairro Alto district, with it's old buildings, cobbled streets and the parliament building near by.

Old and unspoiled it may be, but it's still very "real" and ordinary people live here
And of course the trams run everywhere....

The River Tejo (Tagus) had many yachts on it.
The Discoverers Monument was built on the north bank of the Tagus River in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. The Portuguese were a *great* nation of explorers.

Inside the Maritime Museum
Early maritime exploration sat alongside exhibits of more modern naval history and included some paintings like this one, depicting the realities of warfare at sea in the second world war.
